BAA forced to part with London's Gatwick
BAA is to put Gatwick Airport on the market. Colin Matthews, BAA’s chief executive, said “We have decided to begin the process of selling Gatwick Airport immediately”. Industry commentators suggest that the airport could be worth from £2 to £3billion. Gatwick currently services more than 35 million passengers each year and has attracted a healthy amount of interest from amongst others Virgin Atlantic, Manchester Airports Group and Singapore owned Changi Airports Group.
BAA have come under fire from the Competition Commission who said in a provisional statement that they should sell three of its seven UK airports, including two in the south which include Gatwick, Stansted and Heathrow and of Scotland’s, either Edinburgh or Glasgow. BAA have disagreed with this and said it would try to keep all of their remaining airports.
The Competition Commission said that it is continuing with its investigation and it would publish its final report and remedies in early 2009.
